    Trinidad: POS the new Baghdad

    Port-of-Spain -- Sept. 11, 2011 -- (trinidadexpress.com): Trinidad and Tobago now rivals Jamaica as the most violent country in the Caribbean, with the number of annual murders rising sharply from 98 to 550 over the last decade, with some areas in the Port of Spain police division being listed among the most dangerous in the world.

    Trinidad: Cocaine War Averted

    Port-of-Spain - Sept. 7, 2011 - Government stopped a bloody cocaine war between Colombian and Mexican drug leaders in this country which threatened numerous lives by calling the sudden state of emergency on August 21.

    Port-of-Spain - Sept. 5, 2011 - (newsday.co.tt):  The state of emergency declared by President George Maxwell Richards on August 21 was yesterday extended for a period of three months after Government MPs voted for the extension during an historic Sunday sitting of the Parliament, coming after 28 hours of debate over three days.

    Port-of-Spain -- Aug. 22, 2011 - At midnight last night, TT was placed under a limited state of emergency to facilitate anti-crime curfews in hot spots, as announced a few hours earlier by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

    July 4, 2011 -- Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on June 30 urged Caribbean nations to combat organized crime on a regional level and promised United Nations assistance in the fight.

    May 30, 2011 - " I expressed my disappointment with the way in which the enquiry was conducted as I was given less than twenty four hours to submit a statement for consideration by the committee and, moreover, one of the five members of the Committee is from Uruguay and did not have the value of a translated version of my or Mr bin Hammam's submission.  This lack of translation services brings into question the issue of due process."

    May 30, 2011 - The FIFA Ethics Committee, under the chairmanship of Petrus Damaseb (Namibia), decided today, 29 May 2011, to provisionally suspend, with immediate effect, FIFA Vice-President Jack A. Warner and FIFA Executive Committee member Mohamed bin Hammam from taking part in any football-related activity (administrative, sports or any other) worldwide after examining their cases in relation to alleged violations of the FIFA Code of Ethics linked to the upcoming FIFA presidential election.


    May 26, 2011 - On 24 May 2011, FIFA Executive Committee member and CONCACAF General Secretary Chuck Blazer reported to FIFA Secretary General Jérôme Valcke possible violations of the FIFA Code of Ethics allegedly committed by official.

    Kingston -- March 24, 2011 - Prime Minister Bruce Golding said that serious crime this year is down by 42% over the comparable period last year

    NIA-CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (February 15, 2011) -- Police on Nevis met their target to reduce crime by 10 percent in 2010 over the previous year, a success attributed to the hard and dedicated work of the officers stationed at the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force - Nevis Division. 

    Feb. 8, 2011 -- (guardian.co.uk): Britain is to abandon its warship patrols of the Caribbean for the first time since the second world war because of the navy's funding crisis, the Guardian has learned. The withdrawal means the navy will no longer provide a warship for anti-narcotic operations in the region, and will have to reduce its role in disaster relief work.


    Joint Regional Communications Centre Barbados, January 14th, 2011: In an effort to sharpen the regional response to transnational organized crime, the CARICOM Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS) and the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force (CFTAF) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) setting forth their plans to work together on the issue of financial crimes, including money laundering and the use of the proceeds from the trade in narcotics and arms that  fund gang and terrorism related activity.


    Jamaica: Reduction in major crimes in 2010

    Kingston - Jan. 6, 2011 -- The country reaped significant success in crime fighting in 2010, as for the first time in many years, the number of major crimes declined by 7.3 per cent.


    Dec. 22, 2010 -- "The U.S. request to extradite a powerful "Don" with close ties to the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has presented Prime Minister (PM) Bruce Golding's Government with a dangerous dilemma: the requested extradition could spark violent incidents, ignite rivalries among competing gang factions, and unleash a challenge to the state and to Golding's own influence in West Kingston and beyond. The Mayor of Kingston warns of "severe repercussions" and "collateral damage." His fears are not unfounded."
